Supporting with digital confidence is paramount when looking to develop colleagues in your school. While you may know that CPD is happening 24/7/365 online, many won’t. Making it so that teachers feel empowered in their teaching and learning with technology is a difficult thing to get right. There are lots of ways in which you can help support colleagues, one of my favourite tried and tested methods is through the use of Digital Leaders. Their non-confrontational, helpful and supportive training is, in my experience, the perfect recipe for helping educators.
To help understand the various stages of confidence when using technology I created this flow chart based upon the writing of Mandinace & Cline. In their book they talk about various stages of confidence related to technology.
The flow chart helps in a number of ways. It shows a path to which people can aspire. It also involves some good learning; sharing, innovating, improving, developing, practice, action research… It also provides, for me, a nice roadmap to link to staff development in using technology. It is helpful for when planning differentiated delivery to large groups. The innovators can help and support those who feel they are at a mastery level. Impact levels can support survival, although I do like to use Digital Leaders, if they are in place, to support those starting their journey with being confident at using technology. You can also use it as a guide to create a menu of different options for colleagues to try out across your CPD sessions. I hope you find it useful too.
